For this issue, we delve further into the intersections of human life with architecture and design, uncovering the profound impact they can have on our lives at home and in public spaces. This time, we visit designer Phillip Lim´s beachside house in Long Island; a historic house in Düsseldorf remade for the artist Su Xiaobai; a brutalist home in Bruges; Henri Timi’s workshop in Marche, to name a few. We speak to Formafantasma and Tadao Ando, as well as inviting Colin King to style and curate the craft culture-centred collection of American designer Jack Lenor Larsen. Our case studies with stylist Pernille Vest continue, exploring the perfectly imperfect, unpolished edges and raw materiality that reveals simple perfection.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0827/7442/5885/files/AJ19_pm0lv8_b4f19b8e-55a8-469b-999c-409cc1d58453.jpg?v=1764639822
ark-journal-vol-ix
Ark Journal Vol. IX
In ARK JOURNAL VOLUME IX we delve into the rich architectural heritage of Copenhagen with a visit to the THORVALDSEN MUSEUM, the city’s oldest, in a photo essay by architect Mathias Mentze. The rich interiors are the location of an exhibition by SEAN SCULLY who discusses his career with David Risley. A special insert showcases the work of Copenhagen-based artist ALBERT GRØNDAHL, a photographer who explores the intersection of personal narratives and cultural and historical references. Two architecturally significant sites in Copenhagen, Prinsessegården in the Dronningegården complex and the ancient marine arsenal Kuglegården, host the superbly curated CASE STUDIES.

The wide-ranging homes in Ark Journal Volume IX, from Europe to Mexico and Los Angeles, illustrate the creativity and hard work that goes into renovation, restoration and extension, considering what is already there and what can be imagined for the future. Starting close to home, we wander through the beautiful listed Copenhagen apartment of artist couple, ANN SOPHIE VON BÜLOW AND ULRIK HELTOFT who were at pains while renovating to preserve its soul but also make it a family home. Heading to Milan, we look at the meticulous details of the studio and the home of architects. FANNY BAUER GRUNG AND DAVID LOPEZ QUINCOCES, where the past has been reconfigured but also embedded with elements of fantasy for the future. In Mexico, we visit two projects firmly connected to the rich national heritage that blend both indoors and outdoors. In the capital, the founders of KURIMANZUTTO galleries put their faith in architect ALBERTO KALACH to transform the ruins of a former convent into an art-filled home that is as much garden as house. In Oaxaca, architects GABRIELA CARRILLO and MAURICIO ROCHA created a home open to the jungle that straddles the private and the social, using local materials and contemporary idioms to pay homage to ancient sacred sites.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0827/7442/5885/files/AJ18_f461de7e-fd71-49fb-822d-1547db66892a.jpg?v=1764650714
ark-journal-vol-vii
Ark Journal Vol. VII
4 different covers Ark Journal Volume VII explores the interaction of architecture, design and art over time, and looks at history as a constant source of inspiration for creating new ideas. We present detailed examinations of architecture from some of the greatest masters, including an early building by Frank O, Gehry and a modest Marcel Breuer house that is not only a home but, for the most recent owners, also a long-standing lesson in how to live well. The Belgian architect Glenn Sestig discreetly transforms a radical concrete masterpiece by Ivan Van Mossevelde, while collector and designer Frederick Hooft simply leaves an avant-garde 1960s villa largely as he found it. We visit a minimalist Scandinavian house in an untamed coastal landscape and a solitary Nordic villa enveloped by nature, In Volume VII we draw attention to the heritage of craftmanship, especially Latin American practitioners using materials from the past, and visit Mexico City-based Esrawe Studio and online platform Unno Gallery. A special insert is dedicated to designer and artist Marcin Rusak and his reworking of history, nature and craftmanship. In our popular Case Studies, we range from the archaic to the avant-garde in the extraordinary historic home of a sculptor, and an Arne Jacobsen pavilion by the sea is the scene for design pieces with simple lines and organic forms.
4 different covers In Ark Journal Volume VIII we reflect on the idea of a more fluid and holistic way of thinking and creating. We visit perfumer Barnabé Fillion of Arpa Studios in Paris whose work is inspired by his own synaesthesia, visualising fragrances as invisible landscapes. In New York, Landon Metz, an artist whose practice explores painting as a fluid meditative activity, has created an exclusive series of artworks for Ark Journal. We also share a personal memoir by renowned New York-based fine art photographer Martien Mulder. She is a minimalist whose images are sober yet warm and accessible, with photographs reflecting her travels, her movements and her life.

The homes selected for this issue, from Los Angeles to a small city in Northern Italy and from Copenhagen to Brussels, open new perspectives on the culture of specific sites and how the houses relate to their surroundings. John Pawson’s house for Michael Maharam is entirely built from stone from the mountainous site and its liveable minimalism creates a dialogue between nature, architecture and the occupants. Similarly, Kim Rahbek Hansen’s summer house on the island of Falster by Terese Erngaard of Swiss practice Diener & Diener, tells beautifully of finding the right place on the margin between land and sea. Also lapped by waves, in Helsinki, a sauna pivots between private and public life for Finnish architect Tuomas Toivonen and Japanese designer Nene Tsuboi, who are creators and custodians of this contemplative but communal space.

A multitude of creativity, languages and origins comes together in this issue. Among others we meet the multidisciplinary designer Raf Simon in conversation with curator and design director Marco Sammicheli. Also bridging fashion, art and design Ann Demeulemeester and her partner and collaborator Patrick Robyn share their four decade-long creative journey.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0827/7442/5885/files/AJ17_93hkjk_d60015ad-d609-49e0-9701-58e18ac4c629.jpg?v=1764644023
ark-journal-vol-xi
Ark Journal Vol. XI
Ark Journal Volume 11 ponders how history shapes our understanding of art, design and architecture, and celebrates the fluidity of interpretations that evolve over time and the importance of context.
We explore how architects navigate the interplay between tradition and innovation, drawing upon historical precedents while thinking about the future, how adaptive reuse breathes new life into old structures and how architectural interventions honour a site’s cultural heritage.
We feature two iconic mid-century modernist houses, in Mexico City and Cincinnati, that have undergone transformations, but with a deep respect for each house’s rich history and significance. The Southern Californian language of architect Ray Kappe is translated into a contemporary home in Berlin, while a house on an island in the Baltic Sea is built to experience untamed nature.
South African-born architect and curator Sumayya Vally is a voice of the latest generation, and in this interview she emphasises the power of identity, belonging and cultural hybridity in shaping architecture outside conventional norms. With deep respect for the histories embedded in buildings and honouring local crafts and traditions, they work with, rather than against, existing structures while valuing complexity over uniformity, continuity over rupture.

In rural France, Pollet Pinet Architectes breathes new life into forgotten buildings, reviving vernacular traditions through local craft and subtle innovation. In New York, experience how gallerist Suzanne Demisch and collector Jeffrey Graetsch live in spaces where time is not concealed, but embraced. We visit Bosco Sodi’s house and studios in Mexico that embody the raw synergy between architecture and art, and artist and food visionary Laila Gohar in her New York loft, an interior where creativity, design and storytelling merge.
